About Ilsa Solveig
Solveig Lottes is an emerita professor of sociology at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. She holds a B.S. and M.S. from Purdue University in mathematics and a Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania, where she studied in two programs—one focusing on sexuality and the other on research methods and statistics.
Lottes is a Fellow of the Society for the Scientific Study of Sexuality and was invited to join the International Academy of Sex Research. Her work includes an international focus and has been translated into three languages. She co-edited the book New Views of Sexual Health: The Case of Finland and has published nearly 60 book chapters and peer-reviewed journal articles.
After the 4th World Congress on Women in Beijing in 1995, which emphasized the human rights of women, her teaching and publications began to concentrate on human rights. In her recent book, she educates readers about human rights as defined by the United Nations and various scholars. Lottes examines ten social problems and suggests ways to improve the quality of life for Americans by applying human rights principles to policy. She presents a blueprint for Americans to consider in future elections, accommodating multiple political beliefs, and provides evidence to support her views. Additionally, she poses important questions about the kind of country we want the U.S. to be.
